Ageless Lessons (Part II): The Fish King

in What's New

The Jataka Tales, first related over two thousand years ago, illuminate the Buddha’s countless lifetimes as a symbol of great compassion. The Buddha appears in various forms and places to alleviate the suffering of living beings. Thus, the Jataka Tales abound with diverse heroes, each showcasing the transformative power of compassion and wisdom.

One such hero is the Fish King. In The Fish King, a compassionate ruler of fishes resides in a lotus-filled lake, dedicated to the happiness and well-being of all in his realm. When his fish face peril during a severe drought, the Fish King invokes the power of virtue to summon a rain storm, saving the lake and all its inhabitants.

“No matter how desperate we are for food and safety, we will never harm each other,” (The Fish King, p. 14).

“We have all the water we need. We are grateful for your generosity, but please stop now!” (The Fish King, p. 17).

The Grace of Balance

In times of turmoil, we may have the tendency to resort to hostility to protect what we have or to feel a sense of control. But what does this really achieve? As proven by the Fish King, having the courage to carry on without resorting to enmity, even in difficult circumstances, is incredibly powerful. It’s even more powerful to find contentment in what we have when we do have enough.

When you feel extremely sad or angry, try to focus on the emotion itself. Look at that specific feeling from all angles. Did that emotion (anxiety, fear, anger, etc.) disappear when you attempted to do so? Did it change into something else? Can you try to cultivate a different emotion, such as joy or excitement? By becoming aware of what these emotions are and how adaptable they can be, you may realize that fearful frames of mind are not as daunting as they seem.
