Happy Quotes-iversary

in What's New

As we welcome July 4th this week, Americans across the country have developed special ways to celebrate Independence Day, whether with fireworks, barbecues, parades, etc. to mark the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Beyond the festivities, the 4th of July serves as a poignant reminder of the opportunities many of us may forget to appreciate on a daily basis. Among them are the freedoms we enjoy, including the freedom of speech, religion, and the pursuit of happiness.

This week, Dharma Publishing not only celebrates the anniversary of our first Quotes book, published on July 4, 2018, but also wishes to express gratitude for the freedoms that have enabled us to cultivate a lifelong pursuit of bringing Buddhism to the West.

“The path of knowledge is a path of independence” (Quotes, p. 33).

“If we learn to see with grateful eyes, we can truly discover a sacred quality everywhere we look” (Quotes, p. 91).

Freedom to Explore

While we may each have our own definition of freedom, it is important to appreciate the opportunities we often take for granted that provide the kind of space to grow and explore our own life purposes. This week, take the time to think about how you can help yourself make the most of freedom, whether by trying new perspectives or introducing new practices.

“My gratitude for all the freedoms and opportunities that America has offered to me is unending. As a Tibetan and now as an American, I feel indebted to the forefathers of both my cherished homelands, the lands of my birth and the land of my naturalization. From a spiritual standpoint, Tibet is the repository of precious knowledge that leads to the most complete freedom humanity can aspire to. From a worldly standpoint, America has a role to play in guarding and championing the cause of freedom around the world” (Tarthang Tulku, Quotes III, p. 9).
